  • September 27th: The Stewart school staff and a BC alum partnered with Beacon Street Gallery and Urban Gatesways to plan the unveiling of the new Stewart playground. They were be responsible for decorations, invitations, refreshments, entertainment, documentation, and press. This was a huge success. Mayor Daley attended along with many news stations to capture the event.

  • BC alumni will lead Saturday School Workshops from throughout the months of October, November and December. The activities will cover a variety of topics such as mosaics, oga, healthy cooking, hybrid cars, basketball, and art. The current dates planned are as follows:
    • October 18th and 25th
    • November 1st and 22nd
    • December 6th and 20th
    • January 10th
    • February 7th and 28th
    • March 14th and 28th

2007-2008 Activities

    • 2/21/07 Math and Science Family night, Stewart School - introduce BC Cares to Stewart community; tour of school; catered dinner; raffle off BC backpacks
  • March
    • 3/25/07 "I Know I Can Day", 10:00am-11:00am, Stewart Elementary
      Volunteers will visit 3rd grade classrooms across the city to read "I Know I Can," a book encouraging children to begin dreaming of attending college, and have a discussion on the topic. Each student will receive a copy of the book. The goal is to raise college awareness among young students, planting the seed for making college attendance and completion a goal. BC Cares will be reading to Stewart 3rd graders on this day.

    • 4/3/07 6th grade Federal Reserve Bank Field Trip (10:00a.m. -1 p.m.)
    • 4/4/07 7th-8th grades Federal Reserve Bank Trip (10:00a.m. -1 p.m.)
    • 4/7/08 6th-8th grades Experiencia Field Trip (9:00 am. - 2:45 pm)
      Experiencia is an education company providing unique Immersive Learning programs for 3rd-6th grade students in two unique programs: EarthWorks - a science, math, and language arts program - and Exchange City - an economics, math, and social studies program. The programs culminate with a full-day simulation at our Center where students apply important concepts and skills as they take on real-life business, government, and science careers. They use state-of-the-art technologies and equipment in a realistic mini-city and cave, forest, prairie and lake ecosystems filled with over 100 live animals. Training with us on March 25th from 10-12. They will instruct us of our roles in the "city" that day and how to help the students become successful while working in the city.

    • 4/19/08 BC National Day of Service from 9:30am-1pm: Hands-on school beautification projects at Stewart Elementary
    • 4/25/08 Montrose Harbor (both 3rd grades) 9:30 a.m.- 12:30p.m.
      Montrose Harbor is a 5 minute bus ride...BC alums will then go into the Yatch Club facility and discuss what students will encounter, which is the "magic Hedge", basically a combination nature walk, bird watching, and beach combing activity. Food web and seasonal changes will be discussed.
