  • Science and History Fairs: volunteers attended both fairs to help out with judging, setting up, and anywhere else the school needed assistance.

2006-2007 Activities

  • Tutoring: Every week, volunteers meet with students on Saturday morning to help them with preparation for the ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test) and other subjects. Several volunteers also tutor individually during the week.

Past Activities:

  • Career modules: The purpose of Career Modules is to expose students to different career options by giving them hands-on experience. Princeton in Chicago Schools (PICS) hosted two modules during the 2005-2006 academic year, the first in media and the second in the nonprofit sector. One of the goals of the program is to pique and nurture student interest in a given field. To this end, PICS secured a summer internship for the nonprofit module. The average class size was eleven students.

    • The first Career Module took place in fall 2005 and focused on Media. Students learned from a sportswriter, a food critic and an editor. They visited the Chicago Tribune newsroom and even sat in on an editors morning meeting.

    • The Nonprofit Module took place during the spring and centered on social programming, community organizing and resource development.

    • Brendan Boyle, a Princeton alumnus, described his experience with the Career Modules during the APS workshop, "Planning Events the Easy Way," on December 7, 2006.

  • Princeton Room: During the school's College Night, PICS hosted a special room for the top-ranked sophomores and juniors to discuss Princeton University and the college experience. Thirty-two personal invitations were sent out to the top-ranked sophomores and juniors in November 2005, and as a result more than thirty Roosevelt students learned about Princeton University.

  • College Workshops: PICS has hosted two "I got into college...now what?" workshops. Outgoing college-bound students and hear from current college students about their experience. More than 40 Roosevelt seniors have participated in the event.

    • In 2006, students heard from Amanda Zoumaya, a first-year student at Northern Illinois University who graduated from Roosevelt in 2005 and who had participated in the College Workshop the previous spring.

  • Partnerships: PICS works closely with Roosevelt's Post-Secondary Coach and existing programs at the school to identify where resources can add the most value. Examples of this include working with the Student Development Day Committee, Jobs for Illinois Graduates and establishing partnerships with Gear Up and the Posse Foundation.

  • Volunteer opportunities: PICS volunteers assist in planning career days and judging the science and history fairs as well as being teaching assistants in classes and mentoring.

  • Scholarships: PICS aided four students in obtaining college scholarships totaling $2750 through the Michael Hudson Dollars for Scholars Program.

  • Fundraising: More than $15,000 has been raised through two silent auctions to support PICS programming at Roosevelt High School.
